Island of Kauai in the Afternoon

The afternoon on Kauai was a heavenly scenic drive along the Coconut Coast with our guide named Domi. At Hanalei Lookout we had a spectacular mountain view surrounded by geometric fields of taro. For lunch we stopped at Anahola Beach where we enjoyed a box lunch while Domi played the guitar for us singing the Hawaiian Wedding Song as well as other lovely pieces. Very romantic lunch. One of the most beautiful places on any of the islands was the Kilauea Lighthouse Point National Wildlife Refuge with its dramatic cliffs and open grassy slopes of an extinct volcano. This provides breeding grounds for native Hawaiian seabirds and nene, the endangered Hawaiian goose. We saw albatrosses as well as red-footed boobies (for real). Domi decided that his Pig Omar would enjoy our lunch leftovers, so we drove to Domi’s house to feed his pig (always an adventure). Hawaiian history is very important to the natives so we learned more than we ever knew we needed to know about King Kamehameha and his reign from each and every guide we had on this journey. We also learned about native Hawaiians (50% or more) and all that the government offers them including free land. This was truly the Heaven part of the tour on the island of Kauai. MA
