Black Sand Beach Adventure

Krista and I love to read the guide books to find adventures for the family. On our second day in Hawaii, she and her family spent the morning at a beautiful beach north of the condo then picked us up for a brief beach encounter. On our way south to the condo she mentioned a Black Sand Beach she had read about and, although we had protests from the two young ones, we “accidently” missed the turn for our condo and kept going, looking for the special beach. What a road we found; it was honestly like driving on the surface of the moon---road across the lava that was sharp, pot hole filled, and twisty to the ocean. The mile of road took forever as we bounced up and down, but the beach we found was like nothing we had ever seen. Black lava mixed with white coral--not what we would call a beach, but amazing. As the storms wash away the black lava sand, pieces of coral from the reef are brought onto the beach by the waves.

Jim danced across the slippery lava at water’s edge and ended up on his back. Miraculously he was uninjured and saved the video camera from the Pacific. Old People on Adventures--scary. MA
