Day 4 is Saturday and we picked up our rental car and headed across the Golden Gate Bridge-awesome bridge. Luckily we realized we would not need a car to tour San Francisco and setup the rental for Saturday because we found out our hotel had a $45.00 per day car parking fee!! Everyone wanted to rent us a car to drive around SF for a week, but only Hertz would rent us a car one way to Southern California. Our dentist had told us a tricky road to take to look across the bay to SF, but of course, we got lost and ended up on the curviest, cliff hugging roads around AND a fantastic view of the bay. Beautiful coastline. Though it was raining buckets again we headed to Muir Woods north of SF and spent a few hours among the giant redwood trees. In the area called Cathedral Grove (see MA in photo there) you truly felt like you were in a spiritual place and felt the need to be quiet. Our route for the day was south to Monterey to spend the night and along the way I mentioned a town called Castroville. Jim was very enthused about this because of a Food Channel story on Castroville, the Artichoke Capital of the World. He was sure the town was filled with artichoke possibilities and I was convinced he was crazy. Sure enough we pulled off the road and the first thing we saw was “The Fried Artichoke”, an artichoke specialty restaurant!! Jim bought a bag of greasy, delicious fried artichoke hearts==WHO knew?? Upon reaching Monterey and checking into our small, but lovely room at the Marisposa Inn, I decided I needed an ER. After several days of being unable to swallow, it was time. Using the GPS we found an Urgent Care Center called “Doctors On Duty” which Jim now calls “Doctors Without Diplomas”. I was diagnosed with bronchitis and a throat infection and given antibiotics, cough syrup with Vicodin!!! and 3 days of steroids because my throat was so swollen. (Charged me $222. and would not take BC/BS ). Don’t know why we can’t stay well when we travel. Anyway, tomorrow we travel south on the Pacific Coast Highway---sure hope the rain and wind stops. MA
