British Isles Travels-England & Guernsey

After seeing miles and miles of London on foot, we were ready to be driven around a bit. We were picked up at our hotel and driven to the port at Southampton to catch our cruise ship. On the way we saw the beautiful countryside of southern England and had touristy stops at Salisbury Cathedral and at Stonehenge. One of my Bucket List Items has always been Stonehenge so I was especially thrilled to stop there. Jim labeled the photo of the two of us at the stones "Fossils at Stonehenge". Not nice. We boarded the ship at about 2 pm and sailed four hours later; we sailed that night to Guernsey Island off the coast of Normandy, France in the English Channel. The little island was occupied by the Germans in World War II causing most residents to send their children to live in England during the war. Now it is a beautiful little port town (photos of small marina and waterfront walk). The ship was too big to dock there so we had to take the bouncy little tenders ashore, but it was a pleasant place to walk the steep narrow streets up the slopes of the town. We are never quite sure why these huge ships stop at these tiny places and overwhelm the town with tourists, but I am sure it helps the economy if they can just make it through the day with so many people at one time. After all we added 3,000 people at once to their population of 16,000. Jim had searched all of London for a lens for his video camera to no avail, but of course, he found it in tiny St. Peter Port, Guernsey. Go figure. That night we sailed north to catch our first glimpse of Ireland the next morning. MA
